This article analyzes the main aspects of the gay subculture in the city of Lisbon in the first half of the 17th century. During this period, the Court of the Holy Office was a powerful institution that, using the authority conferred by the Pope, was used by kings to prosecute heresies and crimes of a sexual nature. The inquisition processes, in particular, evidence an ongoing repressive concern of the established powers against the sodomites' way of life, their customs, habits, and behaviors. Based on micro-history, the study highlights this movement as a whole, emphasizing that the convergence of testimonies suggests the existence of this subculture in the Iberian region already in the 17th century.
