The paper examines how the historiographical work História da República Rio-Grandense, of 1882, by the politician and historian Joaquim Francisco Assis Brasil, represents a turning point in the writing of history about the Farroupilha. Based on Angela Alonso’s problematic regarding the 1870 generation, I investigate how that historical work represented a historiographical and political turning point in the writing about the Farroupilha. Therefore, the aim is to analyze how the narrative about the Farroupilha was constructed in the context of crisis of the institutions of monarchical Brazil. To achieve this goal, the concept of historiographical operation of Michel de Certeau is used, that is, how, based on an analysis of the social place, the practice and the writing, one can perceive the transformations in the writing of history about the Farroupilha. Finally, it is shown that the work analyzed was an object of both political struggle and theoretical turn in the writing about the Farroupilha.
