Francisco Inácio Marcondes Homem de Mello (1837-1918) was an important thinker of History in Brazil during the 1800s. In his professional trajectory, the baron was a fellow of the IHGB, professor of History at institutions like the Imperial Colégio Pedro II, the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes and the Colégio Militar, besides holding political positions such as president of the provinces of São Paulo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. In this article, I analyze the historiographic craft of this author based on his first writings, which enable the understanding of his conception of history in terms of research and teaching.
