This article analyzes the projects for the creation of dioceses and prelatures in Brazil since the transfer of the Court, in 1808, until the end of the regency period, in 1840. This historical context was turbulent and of great economic, social, and political transformations. I seek to contribute to the debate by analyzing a set of diversified sources, which allow us to understand the construction of the National State, when Brazil sought to strengthen its sovereignty in relation to the Holy See and override temporal power with the spiritual one. The only advance that occurred was the suppression of the prelatures of Goiás and Mato Grosso and their elevation to the status of dioceses. Institutional expansion was hampered by regalism, by economic and political crises and by the prerogatives of the right of patronage.
