Non-homogeneous temperature distribution in plasma nitriding furnace
Abstract
Plasma Nitriding is a process that has been intensively studied in the last 30 years and presented technical, economical and environmental advantages over the conventional processes. However, non homogeneity of temperatures in the chamber, corner effects as well as electrical arc formation are factors affecting the dissemination of this process on the termochemical treating industry in Brazil. This paper is part of a work that has as a main goal to evaluate temperature differences among the parts placed in different positions into a plasma nitriding chamber and, moreover, to characterize the resulting microstructures. It was detected temperature differences among some samples in the order of 20ºC producing sensible discrepancies in the compound layer thickness, in the nitrogen diffusion and in the hardness profile.
