Abstract

Cities in general are treated as an ecosystem and as such contains a community of living organisms, with the predominance of men, a physical environment that becomes the result of internal activity, and an operation-based exchange of materials, energy and information. In this context, falls within the area object of the proposed study, a particular area illegally occupied by 200 families, with homes in precarious character, located in an area at risk and subject to flooding by the proximity to the Passo Fundo River in Cruise District, next to center of the city of Passo Fundo, RS. Although environmental issues have gradually assumed greater importance in recent years as a factor of sustainability, there is difficulty in assessing the environmental damage caused by a type of intervention. After characterization of the study area, use of questionnaires was performed on samples from three groups of the surrounding residents, with radii from 0 to 200 meters, 200 to 400 meters and more than 400 meters of the study area. The indicators discussed cultural, socioeconomic and environmental impacts exist to evaluate the possible interventions of urban and environmental recovery and to guide future policies of urban management.

Key words: environmental impacts, environmental sustainability, urban management.
