This article is about an alternative recovery of sludge from Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Water Treatment Plant (WTP) through its use as landfill cover. The use of sewage sludge as alternative cover material is common in some countries and has several advantages: cost savings in the purchase of material cover, as well as, sludge disposal; improvement in the quality of leachate; nutrients supply for vegetative cover (top soil), among others. In this study, two different sludges were tested and both were initially physical-chemical and bacteriological characterized and subsequently stabilized with 15% of lime (CaO), to reach the environmental requirements to use as landfill cover. Following the study, these treated sludge were mixed with clay soil at 1:1 ratio (soil: sewage sludge and water treatment sludge stabilized) and the geotechnical characteristics of this mixture were compared with natural soil and with the recommended values from literature. The results indicate that the combination of sludge from STP and WTP, chemically treated with lime, has potential for use in landfill covers.
Key words: solid waste, sewage sludge, landfill, landfill cover, geotechnical evaluation.
