Abstract

This article refl ects on the characteristics and references of the “new humanism” announced as imperative for the model of education to be developed in the 21st century. It discusses the meaning, appropriation and resignifying of humanism in the light of infl uential international publications in the area of Education, especially those related to the United Nations’ Educational, Scientifi c and Cultural Organization. It concludes that the appeal to a “new humanism” is connected to two converging factors, viz. the need to redevelop educational systems and the construction of a “new man”, taken as strategies to cope with the threats of “imbalance of the social body” and adaptation to a historical destiny declared as inexorable.

Key words: new humanism, humanism, UNESCO.
