Abstract

This article discusses the concept of Social Pedagogy as it has been used in Europe, more specifically in Spain and Portugal, comparing it to the experiences of non-formal education constructed and consolidated in Brazil. It explores the possible convergences or divergences between the philosophical theories and methodological assumptions of both experiences. However, it is a tentative theoretical approach to the topic, motivated by the authors’ involvement in the areas of teaching, research and extension courses that emphasize educational practices historically seen as non-formal. The paper also reflects on these educative interventions, establishing a dialog with them in order to relate them to other areas of knowledge. At the same time it reiterates the need for a study on Social Pedagogy as a knowledge that crosses discipline boundaries and transversalizes non-formal educational practices.

Key words: education, educational practices, non-formal education, social pedagogy.
