The Archive of the Cabañas Hospice: investigation and retrieval of an educational institution in 19th century Mexico
Abstract
This paper describes the retrieval of the historical archive of the Cabaña Hospice, a charity institution founded by the end of the 18th century by bishop Juan Ruiz Cabañas y Crespo. It indicates the archive’s potential for furthering the study and understanding of the social and cultural history of Mexican educational institutions. It refers to sources from similar archives also located in Guadalajara, showing the informational wealth for further research on the subject, contributing to the retrieval of the history of educational institutions. In order to facilitate the understanding and assessment of these sources, the article also discusses their validity and problems, as well as diverse methodological approaches on education history.
