The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between the functionality of adults and elderly people with risk and protection factors (depression, family support, religiosity, reasons for living and quality of life). This cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 140 patients with physical or hearing impairment, attended at a rehabilitation center. Mental State Miniexame, Personal and Clinical Information Questionnaire, Baptist Depression Scale (Hospital / Ambulatory Version), Family Support Perception Inventory, Duke Religiousness Scale, Self-Care Action Scale for Elderly People with a Focus in the Activities of Daily Life (Basic, Instrumental and Advanced), Scale of Living Reasons and Vitor's Elderly Life Quality Scale. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test, Pearson's correlation and linear regression analysis with resampling method. As main results, depression and unsatisfactory quality of life were evidenced as risk factors capable of meaningfully predicting functionality. The perception of family support, religiosity and reasons to live as protective factors capable of helping to adapt to personal responses and favor activities of daily living were also identified. These results reveal the importance of these factors in the functionality of patients, as well as in the planning and monitoring of the rehabilitation of adults and the elderly with disabilities.
