Conjugal violence is a scarcely studied phenomenon, however, a few publications tackle the possibilities for couple therapy in this context. This article is an integrative literature review on publications about the theme from 2011 to 2016, through the following databases: ISI Web of Science, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, Lilacs, and Medline. Sixteen articles were fully analyzed. Studies were predominantly published in The United States, in 2014, and designed as literature reviews. Objectives were not homogeneous, varying from assessments on the effectiveness of couple therapy in conjugal violence and investigations on variables associated to the context of violence in intimate relationships and therapy to contributions of theoretical constructions about the theme. Results evidenced that different demands are associated to manifestations of violence in conjugality, which limits the usage of similar interventions for all cases. Divergences are still ongoing about individual or conjoint treatments, which indicates the need for theoretical developments to sustain the practice.
Keywords: marriage, conjugal violence, couple therapy, intervention.
