Preschoolers’ behavioral problems in a Brazilian school-clinic as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)
Abstract
The goal of this study was to characterize the population of preschool children who sought the psychological school-clinic at a public university in the state of Paraná in the period from August 2004 to May 2006. The data were collected through an identification record of the child and the CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist), versions of 1 ½ to 5 years and 4 to 18 years, which provides a behavioral profile through a computerized analysis. The research project’s participants were 103 mothers with children of preschool age (2 to 6 years), who were interviewed individually and asked to fill in the CBCL. The study corroborated data from previous research, since most of the children were in fact evaluated by the instrument as being clinical and maintained some characteristics, such as higher prevalence of male children and predominance of externalizing over internalizing behavior.
