Family assessment, depressive symptomatology, and stressor events in mothers with and without autistic children

Abstract

This research aims at comparing family functioning, symptoms of depression, and perception of stressor events in mothers of children/adoles­cents with autism, and children without symptoms. 18 mothers participated in the study, separated in two groups named G1, and G2. G1 was composed by 9 mothers of children/adolescents with autism, in psychotherapy process for more than two years, and G2 was composed by 9 mothers of children without autism. Mothers from both groups were paired by age, financial sta­tus, education, and also number and age of children. There were significant differences between groups as to dimensions of family functioning, stressor events, and depressive symptoms.
