Abstract

A significant part of the older population in middle and low-income countries experiences adversities for cognitive aging. In this context, it is useful to study measures, such as the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE), which use a substitute respondent for the assessment of elderly people affected by neurocognitive disorders. The present study verified whether functional and cognitive impairments and whether subjective complaints of impairments in physical and cognitive health predict the IQCODE score based on a 9-year follow-up with Brazilian community-dwelling elderly. The sample consisted of 118 elderly people, and their substitute informants, participating in the baseline of the FIBRA-JF Study. We use the Multinomial logistic regression, with the IQCODE as the outcome variable and as independent variables, the sociodemographic characteristics; health status; performance in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); changes in the ability to perform basic (BADL), instrumental (IADL) and advanced (AADL) activities of daily living; satisfaction with life; metamemory and score on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Changes in MMSE, IADL and GDS 9 years ago and changes after this period for ABVD and AIVD and AAVD were identified as explanatory indicators of the functional and cognitive decline reported by the informant. These results reinforced the usefulness of the IQCODE as a cognitive assessment tool for the elderly.
