Abstract

The way parents take care of their children is influenced by several aspects, including personality. Researching this relationship can contribute to knowledge about characteristics that tend to be positive in parenting. This research aimed to investigate the relationship between personality characteristics and parenting style of parents in a custody dispute situation. A quantitative study was carried out, using the NEO-FFI-R and the Parenting Styles Inventory. The study included 25 parents (13 women and 12 men), aged between 21 and 57 years, who were disputing custody of their children in the southern region of Brazil. Despite the possible influence of social desirability, the study showed that most parents have a good repertoire of positive parenting practices and showed that the dimensions of kindness and conscientiousness are personality characteristics that are associated with the development of positive parenting practices. Neuroticism was identified as a personality characteristic that influences the development of negative parenting practices. It was concluded that parental personality can influence different parenting behaviors. The study can help professionals who work with families to have a better understanding of the influence of personality on parenting styles.
