Abstract

From analyses of the City from an institutional perspective to the analysis of the urban phenomenon as a socialhistorical complexity, historians and social scientists have made several contributions to the understanding of urban issues in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. This article discusses the history of the reflection about the City as a specific form of social organization, attempting to delineate an overview that goes back to the emergence of a more specific scientific thinking about the City as a social form since the 19th century, which underwent a particular development in the 20th century. At a second moment it discusses the use of images in the construction of knowledge about the City. In relation to this aspect, the article’s goal is to present an analysis of the several models of the City in 20th century urbanistic thought in the Social and Human Sciences, including Sociology, Anthropology and, more particularly, History.

Key words: city, Social Sciences, image.
