Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the combined treatment of leachate from the São Leopoldo landfill with the domestic sewage treatment plant of the Sinos Valley University (UNISINOS) by means of Advanced Oxidation Processes, with addition of ozone (O3). Two experiments were carried out, in which 100 liters of effluents were treated in each of them, testing two proportions of leachate in the sewage, of 2% and 5%, which are common in ETP that operate combined treatments. The following parameters were monitored: Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Apparent and True Colors, Turbidity, Total Nitrogen, Total, Organic and Inorganic Carbons and pH. The first test with a mixture of 2% of leachate with domestic sewage presented viable treatment, with mean removals of BOD and COD of 90% and 91%. Removals of apparent color (92%) and true (98%) were also obtained. As the concentration of leachate in the sanitary sewage increased (5%), some evaluation parameters, mainly total nitrogen, turbidity and COD, were significantly affected. The results obtained in this study suggest that the concentration of 2% of leachate is the best indicated for the combined treatment of domestic leachate and sewage.
